Khama Billiat Ready For Famous Derby
Talented Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Khama Billiat is set to play his first Soweto Derby this Saturday since joining Kaizer Chiefs at the start of the season following the expiry of his Mamelodi Sundowns contract. So much will be at stake as the two biggest teams in the South African Premiership will be at loggerheads chasing more than just three points.
It is understood that Orlando Pirates were the first to make steps to secure Billiat into their team as soon as he made it known that he would not be renewing his contract with Sundowns.
There have been further reports that Pirates and Billiat failed to agree on terms, leading to Kaizer Chiefs snatching up the midfielder for their team.
The Zimbabwean international is said to have been offered a signing on fee of R2 million by Pirates which he turned down, triggering allegations that Kaizer Chiefs put a way better deal on the negotiating table.
However, Orlando Pirates assistant coach, Rhulani Mokwena claims not to have lost the race for Billiat’s signature but rather chose not to sign him up due to a number of reasons including injuries and expenses.
“We had lots of talks with Khama, myself and the players. We were very close to bringing him to the black and white. But we decided to protect the changing room more than anything else,” he said.
“The ratio between the expense , and when I say expense I am not only talking about the salary because we heard a lot of talk about that. But the expense with regards to injuries and certain other factors and for the profit that we thought we would get, we thought it did not make sense to sign the player,” Mokwena added.
Despite the Pirates sentiments that Billiat is not in great form, Billiat has settled well into his new home, scoring five goals and dishing four assists in the 13 appearances he has made so far in the season. Khama also won the ABSA Premiership September Player of the Month. The Buccaneers supporters are now seen going in numbers to the stadiums as their team is playing well once again.
Billiat will line up for Kaizer Chiefs along with fellow country men Willard Katsande and Teenage Hadebe while Kuda Mahachi and Marshal Munetsi will also be hoping for a triumph in the Orlando Pirates colours as the five Zimbabweans take part part in the famous encounter.
