Magaya Eats Humble Pie, Retracts HIV/AID Cure Claim
Prophetic Healing and Deliverance (PHD) Walter Magaya retracted his claims for having found a cure for HIV/AIDS and for making the announcement, whilst speaking at a joint media briefing with the Health Ministry on Thursday stating that he made the announcement out of “excitement”.
Prophet Magaya conceded to the demands of the government and the Zimbabwe Association of Doctors for Human Rights (ZADHR) to retract his claims and publicly apologise or face legal charges against him.
In a joint press conference with the Ministry of Health and Child Care which had several government officials, Obadiah Moyo and his Deputy Dr John Mangwiro, the Prophet stated that his actions where impulsive and where out of excitement without knowledge that he was infringing regulations of medicines in the country.
The apology that I carry is an apology of saying we rushed to announce what we were carrying without the authorities analysing it but at the same time, I want to salute the Ministry (Health) which has handled me like a child and showed me the way.
At the same time, I carry a very important apology to the ministry, to the public at large and all organisations, Magaya said.
Prophet Magaya said his apology following calls by Government and other stakeholders to publicly retract the claim until a proper clinical trial on the efficacy and safety of the Aguma herb had been done.
Magaya who announced to his congregation on Sunday that he had found the cure to HIV/AIDS and cancer, claiming that God had led him to a plant called the Aguma which when mixed with some herbs from Mozambique can fight HIV to undetectable levels within 14 days.
The announcement by the charismatic prophet triggered a chorus of criticism of the prophet Magaya by the government saying such an announcement should have been preceded by scientific clinical tests by approved bodies.
The Prophetic Healing and Deliverance Ministries founder was also back lashed on social media and from the United Nations and local health rights groups when he stated that him and a group of Indian researchers had found a cure for HIV/AIDS and Cancer.
ZADHR ordered Magaya to retract HIV/AIDS claims as he was contravening Medicines and Allied Substance Act (Section15:03) and Part, Section 32 of the Public Health Act. The ZADHR stated that failure to comply with their demands would lead to a legal suit against the Prophet.
According to what I have learnt, the authorities of Zimbabwe and all the regulatory authorities were supposed to scrutinise, analyse and be satisfied with what I was holding before I prematurely announced.
The reason of the rush was because of excitement of what I was holding, the excitement which, Magaya also said.
Health and Child Care Minister Dr Obadiah Moyo praised Prophet Magaya’s decision to retract his claims whilst speaking on the same occasion. Dr Obadiah Moyo also urged people who are living with HIV and AIDS to continue taking their antiretrovial drugs.
We want to continue emphasising to the population that whatever ARVs that you are on, please carry on taking them. Prophet Magaya’s medications are not yet approved, said Dr Moyo.
